George Meszetler was one of the most genteel, non-assuming persons I have ever known. He was a best friend to many who knew him, and one to whom you went when you needed advice on how to do anything with model airplanes. His passionate involvement in aviation spanned seven decades beginning in Hungary, his birth place.
As a teenager his attraction to gliders was forged when given a ride in a Minimoa (a popular sailplane of the mid 20’s) and the fever never left him. George’s early years in the European landscape of aviation modeling netted acclaim and won him awards for his prolific designs and flying skills.
In the mid fifties he escaped the tyranny of communism, losing everything and came to the United States with his wife and daughter to start a new life. The struggle that he and his wife Magdalena endured in those early years was very difficult. They tenaciously survived and in the early 1960’s George co-founded the Rockland County Radio Control Club. His passion for the hobby was resurrected and flourished for the remainder of his years touching hundreds who were privileged to have known him.
George was a consummate giver, a joy to be with and a great friend. His contributions to this hobby are a treasure we will use and enjoy 'till we go flying with him in the big sky.
